Once you choose hope, anything is possible. - C. Reeve

According to the National Canine Cancer Foundation (www.wearethecure.org), Canine Cancer affects one out of every three dogs. Sadly, it seems that most people are affected by cancer in one way or another these days, whether in human or canine form. So, when one of our very own foster dogs, Becki, was diagnosed with cancer, we made an informed decision to move forward with treatment to offer her quality of life, comfort, and what we hope and pray will be a cure.

BECKI'S STORY:

Waggin' Tails received an email request looking for placement for a dog whose owner went into a nursing home. No one in the owner's family was able to keep Becki. As an older dog, Becki's chances for adoption from a shelter would be slim at best and she would be stressed in that type of environment.

Fortunately, one of our volunteers, Jen P., offered to take Becki in as a foster. And, as luck would have it, Becki was discovered by a wonderful couple in Plymouth where she was placed on a trial adoption and now affectionately is known as Miss B. It was during this trial period and subsequent trip to the groomer that the mass was found. We immediately scheduled an appointment at Jeffrey Animal Hospital where she was referred to the Animal Cancer & Imaging Center in Canton for further diagnostics and treatment.

Our Becki was diagnosed with anal sac adenocarcinoma. Docs believe cancer is in the early stage and has not spread to other organs yet. Good news is that Becki is currently acting normal - active, eating and drinking. Surgery to remove the mass is scheduled for November 8th, which will be followed by several rounds of chemotherapy to ensure all of the cancer cells are killed.

Surgery and chemotherapy are not cheap treatment options ($3000 for surgery alone), but we believe it is the best possible route for our girl. Stay tuned for updates on a fundraiser to help offset the costs of Becki's treatment.
